The Director of Teaching, Learning, and Innovation is a pivotal leadership role at the Morven Campus. Reporting directly to the Senior School Principal, this position will play a crucial role in shaping the future of education at Morven. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with a deep commitment to student learning and a passion for educational innovation.

This leader will provide strategic and day-to-day oversight of the transformative learning experiences which underpin our approach to forward-focused learning. As a member of the Morven Leadership Team, and broader School Leadership Team (SLT), the candidate will contribute to a cohesive and collaborative team and support the School’s Mission, Vision and Values.

The Director of Teaching, Learning and Innovation will supervise the Heads of Department (HoDs), our team of Growth Coaches, and our Teaching Interns. The successful candidate will work closely and collaboratively with our broader Academic Committee (which includes the Director of Academics, the Director of University Guidance, the Director of Inclusive Education and the Dean of Student Life) to develop and implement innovative teaching and learning strategies, foster a culture of professional growth, and support student achievement. This is a Permanent Full-Time position that will start in the 2025-2026 school year .

Key Responsibilities :

Instructional Leadership : provide strategic oversight for teaching and learning practices across the high school (G8-12) campus :

  • Develop, articulate and implement a comprehensive strategic approach for the development of forward-focused learning practices across the campus.

Research best educational practice on Grade 8-12 education to inform and enrich the school’s growth.

  • Provide professional support and research-based information related to the education of students in Grade 8-12.
  • Lead and facilitate professional development opportunities for faculty, fostering a culture of ongoing learning and innovation.
  • Model effective teaching practices and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate teacher effectiveness and provide feedback for professional development.
  • Monitor the quality of teaching practices across the school.
  • Contribute, as part of the Morven Leadership Team, to the strategic development of the Senior School.
  • Collaborate with the Junior School and Senior School Principals, the Division Leaders, the Director of Teaching, Learning & Innovation (JK-7) and the Senior Leadership Team to ensure whole school coherence and continuity.
  • Inform and support the Senior School Principal on all matters and always uphold Collingwood’s image, reputation and best interests in all things.
  • Facilitate the development and integration of technology into teaching and learning.

Student Achievement : maintain oversight of student achievement data to monitor progress and identify opportunities for improvement :

  • Monitor student progress and identify areas for improvement in the curriculum.
  • Implement strategies to support student success, including academic interventions and enrichment programs.
  • Collaborate with teachers to differentiate instruction and meet the needs of all students.
  • Develop, monitor, evaluate and continuously improve systems to provide the best possible classroom experience for our students.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive culture.
  • Utilize data to inform instructional practices and drive student achievement.

Professional Development : provide strategic oversight for professional development of faculty by developing short- and long-term goals and accountabilities :

  • Oversee and implement the Professional Development plan for faculty.
  • Manage the faculty Pro-D budget for the Morven Campus.
  • Stay current on educational trends and best practices.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and innovation among faculty members.
  • Maintain and update policies, processes and procedures for Pro-D.
  • Oversee the team of Growth Coaches to ensure all teaching faculty receive effective and high-quality feedback on a regular basis.

Teaching and Learning : Foster a learning environment in which all members have a desire to be curious, critical thinkers who are resilient, socially conscious, and prepared to make the most of their opportunities.

  • Model teaching of the highest quality.
  • Facilitate creative and rigorous approaches to teaching and learning that are based in current research.
  • Inform parents of the approaches to teaching and learning implemented in Grades 8-12.
  • Oversee the quality assurance of teaching and learning in the Senior School.
  • Embrace and promote the effective use of technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Lead and oversee innovative programming, including grade 9 project week.

Community Engagement : Maintain a high visibility on campus and be accessible to students and parents.

  • Collaborate with parents and guardians to support student learning and well-being.
  • Represent the school at community events and conferences.
  • Promote the school at the annual UBC Teacher Job Fair.
  • Have an interest in, and affinity for, community engagement activities on behalf of the school.
  • Oversee the student academic executive committee.
  • Serve as an active collaborator in educational policy development.
  • Liaise with partner schools locally and globally to develop a network of best-practice and promote Collingwood.
  • Commit to one’s own professional development as a leader.
  • Develop, manage and maintain relationships with students, parents, faculty, the Senior Leadership Team and external parties providing services to the community.
  • Support a range of co-curricular programming which enhances students’ learning experiences.
  • Perform other duties which may be reasonably assigned by the Senior School Principal.

Hire, Lead, Manage and Coach Direct Reports : provide direct supervision and support of colleagues who support teaching and learning :

  • Supervise and direct the work of :

Heads of Department

  • Growth coaches
  • Teaching Intern Coaches
  • Oversee the annual completion of the Professional Goal (PGP) process and provide mentorship and coaching, including supporting internal and external professional development opportunities.
  • Hold colleagues accountable to their annual goals in alignment with school goals and priorities.
  • Work in conjunction with the Senior School Principal, HR Department, and Heads of Department to recruit, hire, evaluate, and retain faculty.
  • Support staffing needs on an ongoing basis.

Required qualifications

  • Canadian residency and legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Masters of Education Degree (or in progress).
  • BC Teaching Certification.
  • 10 years of high school teaching experience.
  • Minimum 7 years of educational leadership experience in a high school setting.

Preferred qualifications and experiences

  • Proven ability to collaborate with administrators, teachers, and parents.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and leading internal planning, programming, and initiatives that support strategic goals.
  • Strong experience developing and facilitating learning for large groups, including faculty and parents.
  • A professional and personal commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive learning community.
  • A belief in the importance of forming strong relationships with students, faculty, staff and parents.
  • A passion for education and leadership, as demonstrated through a record as an effective teacher and as an outstanding mentor of other educators.
  • High personal integrity and impartiality.
  • Ability to think and plan strategically and creatively and to implement change initiatives.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively to the entire school community (students, families, faculty and non-faculty).
  • Significant experience with and knowledge of High School students, their developmental needs, and Senior School curriculum.
  • Strong organizational and management skills.
  • Warmth, consistency, transparency, and a sense of humor.
  • Previous experience with oversight of curriculum and assessment practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and skill development.
  • Experience working and / or leading in an Independent School setting.
  • CAIS Leadership Institute Diploma (an asset).
