Description

The Safety Coordinator II (Afternoon Shift) will coordinate and implement the health and safety management system for the organization while assisting in the development and implementation of programs procedures work instructions and forms in support of the Safety Management System.

The Coordinator is responsible for supporting the yard Safety Manager providing advice and training on safety protocols and conducting audits and inspections to ensure compliance. The Coordinator will work closely with the yard Safety Manager Human Resources the Ability Management team and Labour Relations in closely handling worker injuries and any work accommodations.

Note : Due to business needs this position is required to be fully on-site at 50 Pemberton Avenue North Vancouver.

The following schedule is available :

Afternoon : 3 : 00pm to 11 : 00pm (Monday to Friday)

What youll do
  • Reviews, revises and implements site-specific programs, procedures and work instructions.
  • Ensures all activities comply with site HSE requirements and legislation.
  • Investigates accidents and near-misses and liaises with key stakeholders and management to identify causes of accidents and prevent recurrence through the application of suitable corrective actions.
  • Provides advice and training on safety protocols and conducts inspections and audits to ensure compliance with the organization and government standards related to employee health and safety.
  • Provides new employee and sub-contractor orientation sessions.
  • Conducts site safety tours for visitors (customers, potential customers, contractors, government agencies, etc.).
  • Maintains and analyzes records of workplace injuries, illness and absences to identify areas of concern and provide information required by regulatory agencies.
  • Monitors conditions that could affect employee or contractor health, safety and environmental performance.
  • Verifies completion of safety recommendations and requirements on site.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and verifies compliance with safety standards, work practices, work permit requirements and various safety systems.
  • Assists in safety messaging for toolbox talks.
  • Consults and supports on internal and external required notifications (e.g. regulatory incidents).
  • Participates in the site emergency response team. Attends to all emergencies and directs the workforce away from danger. Assists emergency personnel with their duties and liaises with local emergency response agencies.
  • Aids injured workers in managing their recovery through stay-at-work principles that include suitable work accommodations.
  • Assists injured workers with accommodations where returning to work through a Graduated Return to Work (GRTW) program.
  • Liaises with Abilities Management and Supervision regarding appropriate scheduling and assignment of work accommodations following physical limitations for the injured.
  • Assists in supporting ergonomic risk assessments including identifying hazards and proposing appropriate solutions to limit risk to the workforce.
  • Assists with investigating Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSIs) and with formulating solutions and processes to prevent similar types of injuries.
  • Works in confined space environments.
  • Promotes a proactive safety culture at all levels of the organization with heavy focus on employee engagement in the Safety Management System.
  • Additional safety-related duties as may be assigned to support the department.
What youll bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Health & Safety or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • 5 years of relevant experience including developing, implementing and auditing health & safety management systems and field work.
  • Demonstrated experience in the performance of hazard and/or risk assessments including those required for working at heights and confined space entry.
  • Any of the following certifications/designations: CRSP, CSP, ROH, CIH.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 2 certification
  • Knowledge of regional health and safety legislation.
  • Practical experience in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 45001:2018 an asset.
  • Familiarity working with EHS Management Information Systems (e.g. Intelex or similar).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Excellent decision-making capabilities.
  • Computer literate with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office/Windows environment.
  • Strong leadership ability and rational judgement skills.
  • Ability to build relationships, trust and influence personnel at all levels.
  • Capable of obtaining and maintaining both Controlled Goods Clearance and a NATO secret security clearance.

  • The estimated salary for this position is $84,600 - $103,400. In determining final salary Seaspan considers many factors including the successful candidates skills and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
