About the 12 North General Internal Medicine Unit
Our 12 North General Internal Medicine Unit is a newly established, 20-bed facility leveraging advanced medical technology to enhance patient care. Enhanced by modern design, the unit includes 14 private rooms and is equipped with ceiling lifts in every room to facilitate safer and more efficient patient handling and care. The thoughtful layout and cutting-edge technology integrated into every aspect of the facility are specifically designed to optimize workflow and improve the overall effectiveness of our staff.

Our unit fosters a supportive educational environment, maintaining optimal nurse-to-patient ratios of 4:1 during day shifts and 5:1 on night shifts. Our diverse caseload includes patients with conditions ranging from simple pneumonia to complex, chronic illnesses. We value collaboration while fostering professional development through leadership opportunities, continuing education, and quality initiative projects.

In this role you will:

  • Provide direct patient and family centered care for general internal medicine patients
  • Complete physical assessments on patients
  • Administer medications and provide any necessary care (wound care, IV insertion and management, monitoring drains, getting patients ready for procedures, etc.)
  • Attend nursing rounds and participate in patient/family meetings
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, pharmacists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, etc.
  • Apply a broad range of nursing skills and procedures including (but not exclusive to) CADD pumps, chest tubes, nephrostomy tubes, complex wounds, central lines, enteral feeding tubes, TPN, CIWA monitoring, managing a Code Blues, and chemotherapy
  • Participate in the mentoring of learners, peers and other regulated and unregulated health professionals
  • Advocate and contribute to safe discharge and transition planning
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classificationas required
Job Requirements

Job Requirements:
Mandatory

  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved Baccalaureate Nursing (RN) program. Equivalent combined education and experience will be considered
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate
  • Previous clinical experience working with patients with acute and chronic illnesses


Preferred

  • A baccalaureate degree from a CNO-approved nursing program. Applicants in their final year or near completion will be considered
  • 2 years of clinical experience on a general medicine unit is an asset
  • Previous experience or involvement in process improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development evidenced by membership in professional organizations, CNA certification, etc.


Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent critical thinking, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively and independently under stressful conditions and within a team
  • Highly adaptable to change and innovation with demonstrated change management experience preferred
  • Ability to work with electronic health record system
