Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Protection & Control (P&C) Technician with hands‑on experience in relay switching, cutover activities, and transmission‑level systems. The successful candidate will play a key role in commissioning, maintaining, and upgrading protection and control equipment across high‑voltage transmission systems, with a strong emphasis on safe execution of energization and de‑energization procedures. Experience working in or with BC Hydro standards or similar utilities is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of protection and control systems in transmission substations (typically 69kV to 500kV).
- Support and lead cutover and switching activities, including isolation, grounding, tagging, and energization of high‑voltage equipment, ensuring strict adherence to utility safety and operational procedures.
- Execute relay upgrades, replacements, and logic modifications in coordination with engineering and field teams.
- Perform functional testing of protection schemes, including line protection, transformer protection, bus protection, and pilot protection systems.
- Maintain and update technical documentation, schematics, settings files, and testing records.
- Use software tools and test equipment to program and validate protective relays.
- Interface with System Control Centres, project managers, and engineers to coordinate planned outages and live cutovers.
- Ensure all work complies with BC Hydro standards, WorkSafeBC regulations, and industry best practices.
- Participate in technical reviews and hazard assessments.
Qualifications
- Journeyperson P&C Technician/Technologist or Electrical Engineer.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the transmission power industry with specific exposure to P&C systems and relay switching/cutover operations.
- Demonstrated experience with high‑voltage cutovers, temporary and permanent protection schemes, and live switching coordination.
- Proficiency in protective relay software tools.
- Familiarity with BC Hydro’s safety procedures, switching orders, and P&C documentation standards is an asset.
- Strong understanding of Canadian Electrical Code (CEC).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel.
- Previous work experience with or for BC Hydro considered an asset.
