Job description

Your mission:
Reporting to the Technical Director, the primary responsibility of the Process Automation Manager is to oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of automated control systems to optimize the pulp production prcess. Improving operational efficiency, safety, and product quality through advanced process automation technologies is a key objective of this role. The Process Automation Manager leads a team of Automation Specialists and collaborates with Operations, Process Engineering, Maintenance, and project teams to drive continuous improvement initatives leveraging digital tools and control systems.

  • Lead and manage the Automation team responsible for maintaining and enhancing performance of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and other package control systems in the pulp mill.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize automated process control strategies to maximize throughput, reduce energy consumption, and maintain product quality.
  • Manage projects related to obsolescense combating, upgrading, integrating, and commissioning of new automation systems in collaboration with the project engineering team.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards through automated monitoring and control.
  • Drive initiatives in process data analytics, digitalization, and Industry 4.0 technologies for predictive maintenance and operational insights.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system architecture, control narratives, interlock logic and troubleshooting guides.
  • Plan and control automation budgets, contracts with vendors, and technical procurement.
  • Lead training programs for staff on automation systems and best practices.
  • Monitor control system performance and alarm system performance to implement strategies to continuously optimize and improve performance.

Your profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, instrumentation engineering, automation engineering, or related field. Hold a P.Eng certification or eligible to acquire.
  • Proven experience (typically 15+ years) in process automation within the pulp and paper industry or similar heavy process industries.
  • Strong knowledge of control systems including DCS Delta-V, PLCs (Schneider, Allen-Bradley), Instrumentation.
  • Experience with process optimization and control strategies in chemical or mechanical pulping processes.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
  • Leadership and project management skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory compliance related to pulp mill operations.
  • Experience with digital transformation initiatives and advanced data analytics.
