Overview

The Patient Intake Nurse is an integral member of the interdisciplinary health care team, working to support patients at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry Emergency Clinic. Under the supervision of the Manager, the Patient Intake Nurse, licensed by the College of Nurses of Ontario, provides professional nursing care, utilizing full nursing scope of practice in accordance with established standards of care, policies and procedures. The Nurse will assess and clarify the physical and mental condition to determine medical suitability for the Faculty of Dentistry.

Your opportunity

This position is based in the Emergency Clinic and involves clinical and administrative support to the Faculty of Dentistry clinics. The Nurse communicates with the interdisciplinary team to clarify medical conditions, prioritizes tasks to expedite patient care, and provides medical guidance to faculty, instructors and staff in-person or remotely as needed.

Your responsibilities will include
  • Assessing the physical and mental condition of patients to determine medical needs
  • Using assessment checklists when screening patients
  • Expediting patient clearance following medical intake
  • Identifying patient ASA status
  • Determining if there is a life-threatening illness and independently applying appropriate interventions
  • Probing for information to establish needs
  • Identifying patients where further clarification of medical condition is needed, using a set list of criteria
  • Recording patient data
  • Composing and reviewing medical letters
  • Providing detailed information to physicians regarding patient needs and background history as required
  • Handling sensitive and/or confidential information
  • Updating and maintaining Patient Medical Records (immunization records)
  • Scheduling and confirming appointments
  • Exercising extreme care to prevent serious physical or emotional injury or harm
Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) required. Current registration, in good standing with no practice restrictions, as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Liability insurance or membership in a professional association which offers liability insurance (i.e. RNAO).
  • Minimum five (5) years of clinical practice in primary health (i.e. Family Practice, Community Nursing, Occupational Nursing, Emergency). Experience with Oral Surgery is an asset.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Must have current BCLS
  • Computer skills required (Electronic Health Record platforms, Word and Microsoft Outlook)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize the nursing process in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care
  • Ability to work professionally and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment (Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine, Oral Radiology, Emergency, etc.)
  • Prioritizes and manages time effectively and is flexible in an active work environment
  • Demonstrates strong nursing process and critical thinking
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, attention to detail
