Summary
The HVAC/R Mechanic diagnoses heating, refrigeration, air conditioning systems, and related equipment problems, repairs minor and major breakdown of equipment, performs preventative maintenance items, and ensures all equipment is in safe working condition.
Key Responsibilities
- Installs, maintains, and services industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) units and systems.
- Ensures the capability of efficient operation of all equipment in the work area, by using preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, overhauling, and repairing HVAC/R equipment to achieve operational goals.
- Assemble and install refrigeration or air conditioning components such as motors, controls, gauges, valves, circulating pumps, condensers, humidifiers, evaporators, and compressors using hand and power tools.
- Measure and cut piping, and connect piping using welding and brazing equipment.
- Maintains logs and paperwork for each shift as needed and ensures the accuracy of data reporting systems such as the Maintenance Daily Logs and Work Order forms
Typical Education
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Relevant Experience
- Must have a minimum of two years of experience
- Must have certification as Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanic and a Gasfitter B license.
- Must have the ability to read and understand plant and equipment manuals, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), instructional manuals, and mechanical blueprints.
- Experience with troubleshooting mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems.
- Must have strong aptitude for safe work practices.
Required Certifications
- Red Seal Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanic certification
- Gasfitter B license
- Journeyman License
Other Information
- Must be able to furnish own hand tools.
- Ability to operate a forklift and aerial lift equipment once trained and certified and must meet the standards on fall protection restraints.
- Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, catwalks and maneuver in close quarters.
- Must be able to stand for long periods on concrete floors and work in extreme environments (hot, cold, humid, and slippery).
- Must be able to communicate verbally in a professional manner.
- Must possess basic writing skills for recording information on daily logs, preventative maintenance forms and work orders.
- Must have basic math skills to perform measurements.
- Must have the ability to operate valves, keyboards, equipment, and other controls.
- Must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, or other specifications
- Must have a basic understanding of components, wiring, pipe fitting, brazing, and soldering.
- Must be capable of performing cutting and welding to meet Company’s standards.
