Job summary

A leading engineering consultancy in Durham Region is seeking a Geotechnical Analyst to provide technical support on geotechnical projects. Key responsibilities include conducting field investigations, assisting senior staff, and preparing technical reports. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering and be working towards their P.Eng designation. This is a full-time salaried position offering a salary range of $50,000 - $65,000 CAD annually with opportunities for fieldwork in varying weather conditions.

Geotechnical Analyst

Employment Type: Full time salaried position

Salary Range: $50,000 - $65,000 CAD annually

Hourly Equivalent: $31.27 to $83.24 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support on a wide variety of geotechnical, materials and environmental projects, including the preparation and supervision of field programs, data collection, data analysis, technical report writing, and proposal preparation.
  • Design and conduct field investigations, including soils/rock drilling and logging, test pit logging, soil and bedrock characterization, monitoring well and instrument installation, and associated field coordination and sub‑contractor coordination.
  • Assist intermediate and senior staff in performing design and analytical functions on projects involving slope/embankment stability, retaining walls, seepage, drainage, settlement analysis, shallow and deep foundations, dams, contaminated sites, and landfills.
  • Conduct construction inspection and field testing and sampling of soil, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and groundwater.
  • Measure and record field data using equipment such as water quality meters, water level meters, oil/water interface probes, photoionization detectors, data loggers, GPS, and survey gear.
  • Produce detailed documentation of field conditions, measurements and observations to aid in the preparation of client deliverables (drawings/site plans, borehole/monitoring well logs, photo logs, written reports, etc.).
  • Assist in preparation of proposals and technical deliverables (e.g., geotechnical investigations, geotechnical design and analysis, geotechnical inspections, materials testing and construction inspection, etc.).
  • Perform various office and field tasks related to geotechnical engineering, materials testing/engineering and environmental engineering.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Completion of a recognized bachelor's degree in Civil/Geotechnical/Geological Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Must be working towards gaining a Professional Engineers Ontario (P.Eng.) designation and have 1–3 years of relevant professional experience (preferably in consulting); candidates with less experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize several assignments at one time to deliver work on time and on budget.
  • Understanding and demonstrated field experience in soil/bedrock classification, drilling methods, in‑situ testing (settlement, compaction, packer testing, vibration monitoring, etc.), soil/rock logging, sampling protocols, monitoring well and instrument installation.
  • Familiarity with software packages specific to geotechnical analysis (e.g., borehole logging, analytical software such as Rocscience®, GeoStudio®, etc.) is an asset.
  • Ability and interest to undertake extensive fieldwork in a range of weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Well‑developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
