This is a CASUAL/ON-CALL posting. We are always recruiting to maintain a robust pool of casual staff. This is a unionized environment/position and all vacancies are posted internally for current employees to apply. Working more hours as a casual staff member will build your seniority hours; this will open more opportunities for you when applying for internal vacancies.

As a Food Service Worker with VCH you will:

  • Perform a variety of duties according to Food Safe protocols and quality and safety standards including:
    • portioning and serving meals,
    • washing and peeling vegetables and fruit,
    • preparing items such as tea, coffee and toast,
    • washing dishes and utensils.
    • portioning desserts and assembling sandwiches and salads,
    • preparing and portioning diet items in accordance with nutritional plans,
    • and measuring and combining food and beverage ingredients by methods such as grinding, blending, slicing, dicing and/or puree.
  • Check patient/resident meals/trays to ensure dietary accuracy.
  • Strip wagons/trays, wash dishes and pots, clean food wagons, kitchen equipment, fridges and storage areas and wipe down tables and counter areas; you will also sweep and damp mop floors and remove garbage.
  • Perform related clerical duties
  • May operate a cash register and related equipment, receive payments and provide change for items purchased
  • Answer customer queries.
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Successful completion of Food Safe Certificate Level 1.
  • Grade 10 plus one year’s recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check. As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
