Job summary

A municipal government is seeking a temporary full-time Community Rental & Events Assistant in Markham. This role is responsible for providing front-line customer service and supervising event guests at the Markham Museum during events. Applicants should have excellent customer service skills and be able to work flexible hours. Responsibilities include ensuring event logistics, managing guest experiences, and maintaining security. Previous customer service experience and First Aid certification are required.

Qualifications

  • Strong email and phone etiquette.
  • Previous experience working with children and families is an asset.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Client Services Coordinator, this position is responsible for providing front‑line customer service and supervising event guests of the Markham Museum during large, site‑wide events. The role will ensure that event guests have an enjoyable and positive experience while participating in museum‑delivered activations and exhibition experiences.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversee smooth execution of event activations and ensure a positive visitor experience throughout the event’s duration.
  • Lead activities with the public based on the event or exhibition theme.
  • Address visitor issues promptly, professionally, and, when necessary, escalated to Supervisor.
  • Manage event implementation and logistics, including set‑up and take‑down of tables, chairs, and other activation materials.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain site security and be responsible for opening and closing the Museum grounds, ensuring buildings are locked, alarms set, and assets secured at closing.
  • Takes a lead role in safety and security procedures and responds effectively to emergencies.
  • Ensure a safe and accessible environment for event guests.
  • Ensure client agreements are adhered to as directed by the Business Development & Event Coordinator or designate.
  • Complete an end‑of‑day status report for events/rentals.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and professional atmosphere through general cleaning/maintenance of exhibition and indoor event spaces as required.
  • Maintain constant communication with on‑site staff regarding event details and guest location to coordinate site use by multiple clients.
  • Maintain awareness of and enforce City of Markham Rules and Regulations.
  • Respond to and direct visitor and City staff requests for general issues or maintenance requests.
  • Key duties focused on site needs for large‑scale events, including pre and post set‑up and take‑down, and leading site activations.
  • Operate point‑of‑sale system and answer visitor inquiries over the phone.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Minimum of 16 years of age or older at the start of employment.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills and sensitivity to interact with a diverse range of patrons in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Previous customer service experience.
  • Up‑to‑date Standard First Aid with CPR ’C’.
  • Must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to deal tactfully with customers.
  • Able to follow detailed instructions.
  • Strong email and phone etiquette and effective listening skills.
  • Strong team approach and open/adaptable to change.
  • Must be able to contribute positively to a respectful professional environment.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, database management, etc.
  • Previous experience working with children and families an asset.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in event management or similar career an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver's License an asset.
