Position Summary

A permanent full-time opportunity exists for a Child Life Specialist to join the welcoming Pediatrics team at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, B.C.

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Child Life Specialist who is passionate about supporting the emotional, social and developmental needs of children and families during hospitalization. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in child development and family systems, with the expertise to conduct thorough child life assessments and develop individualized psychosocial care plans. The successful candidate is adept at preparing children and families for medical procedures, coaching effective coping strategies, and facilitating therapeutic and medical play to promote resilience and growth.

This individual demonstrates excellent communication and collaboration skills with families and interdisciplinary healthcare teams, maintains meticulous documentation, and upholds professional standards. Above all, the ideal candidate is proactive, empathetic, culturally sensitive, and committed to empowering children, families and support systems to adapt and thrive in challenging healthcare environments.

What will you work on?

The Child Life Specialist conducts planned educational and recreational activities designed to further the intellectual, physical, emotional and social development of children and adolescents in the hospital. The Child Life Specialist provides children, families and their support systems opportunities to cope, gain a sense of mastery, and engage in self-expression. Child life intervention minimizes both the immediate and long‑term effects of stress, anxiety, and psychosocial trauma, ultimately empowering children, families, and their support system to reach their full potential.

Scheduling Information

Shift types are days and scheduled shifts are Monday through Friday from 08:00 to 16:00 hours.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an area related to Child Development with required coursework for child life certification
  • One (1) year recent related experience
  • Current Child Life Certification (Steps to become certified)
  • Eligible for membership with the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP)
  • Eligible for membership with Child Life Council or the Canadian Association of Child Life Leaders
