Cell Test Engineer Description

The North America Battery Test Lab is seeking Cell Test Engineers responsible for battery cell level performance testing to support our strong Electric Vehicle portfolio. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to contribute to a world-class battery lab from the launch stage all the way to the full operation.

Initially the role will be focused on training, documentation and launch of the lab; will be required to complete all needed training and follow all lab safety processes and procedures. The role will be responsible for developing work procedures for all standard work associated with cell testing, conforming to existing safety standards, developing test scripts and report templates, working on the commissioning of cell testing equipment of the new battery lab.

After the launch of the lab, the role responsibilities would shift to execution and analysis of cell tests, focusing on obtaining the highest quality of data in the most efficient manner possible. Cell Test Engineers will work with lab technicians on test preparation, test setup, test execution and post-test battery handling. The role will be responsible for the creation of a formal test report at the completion of testing as well as any intermediate reports to the test requestors as requested on running or issue status.

Other responsibilities include, but not limited to
In lab launch stage
  • Complete required training; follow safety requirements
  • Work on test preparation and setup
  • Develop and validate test scripts and reports
  • Ensure hardware and software support needs are addressed during installation of equipment and set up of the lab
  • Support the commissioning of cell test equipment
Lab in full operation
  • Develop and execute test plans for cells, including performance and safety testing
  • Keep test requestors informed on status of all running tests, report intermediate results on a regular basis
  • Ensure reports are delivered in a timely manner and highest possible quality
  • Work with automation engineers on verifying test scripts prior to execution
  • Work with data engineers on test data processing, analyzing and visualization
  • Ensure all work procedures and tests comply with lab safety requirements
  • Support root cause analysis and resolution of issues found during testing
  • Attend Cell and Module engineering meetings, support meeting assignments
  • Ensure all training requirements are kept up to date
  • Escalate issues to management as needed
Requirements
  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in Engineering and Testing
  • Knowledge of Lithium-ion battery chemistry, working principle, characterization, and performance
  • Knowledge of Lithium-ion battery components
  • Practical skills of common laboratory tools and instruments
  • Experience of setting up, maintaining, and monitoring tests according to test procedures
  • Capability of large test data processing, analyzing and visualization
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Experience in Lithium-ion battery R&D, Engineering, and Manufacturing
  • Knowledge of up to date Lithium-ion battery technology
  • Experience with Lithium-ion battery testing; Knowledge of cell test methods and specifications, such as USABC battery test manuals
  • Experience with battery cyclers, data acquisition systems, and EIS measurement
  • Experience with DVP&R test plan execution
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a unionized environment
  • Prior experience or knowledge of ISO 17025 or 9001 accreditation
