Job summary

A global rail services provider is seeking a field technician to operate detector cars and conduct rail inspections throughout Canada. This heavy travel position requires a valid commercial driver’s license and excellent communication skills. Candidates should have basic mechanical proficiency and must be physically capable of lifting heavy objects and performing various inspections. Overview

Sperry Rail Service is a leading global provider of Rail Flaw Detection (RFD) services and technologies for railway networks worldwide. We are seeking a field technician to operate detector cars and conduct rail inspections across Canada.

Travel Requirements

This is a heavy travel position! Candidates must be willing and able to travel 3-4 months at a time throughout all of Canada.

Responsibilities
  • Operate detector car and perform vehicle inspections, equipment set‑up, and data recording on computer monitors.
  • Maintain, service, and repair detector vehicle and carriage, including under‑vehicle tasks in clearance as little as 18 inches, crawling, bending, kneeling, and squatting.
  • Climb steps or ladders to access the vehicle repeatedly; perform ground examination of rails with hand test units.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures; report safety violations or faulty conditions to the supervisor.
  • Travel on a regular schedule to pre‑assigned customer sites across Canada.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Valid Class 5 or higher commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic mechanical proficiency; able to change a tire, replace a battery, etc.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry up to 85 lbs., occasionally assist in lifting objects over 100 lbs.
  • Endurance to squat, kneel, crawl under an 18‑inch clearance, and perform extended periods of lower‑extremity work.
  • Ability to travel 3–4 months at a time throughout Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of commercial driving experience.
  • High school diploma or GED.
