Job summary

A municipal organization in Greater Sudbury is looking for a seasonal part-time maintenance worker. Job Status: Seasonal Part Time Position

Estimated Probable Duration: Up to Seven (7) months

Number of Vacancies: 1

Affiliation: CUPE 4705 Outside Unit

Hours of Work: Up to 48 hours bi-weekly

Shift Work Required: Yes

Rate of Pay: $33.74 per hour

Characteristic Duties
  • Act as a general handyman performing a variety of maintenance, repair, minor construction, and grounds keeping duties.
  • Maintain the ice surface using arena refrigeration systems and an ice resurfacer.
  • Conduct regular scheduled ice surface maintenance including edging, ice build-up/shaving, whitewashing, lining, logo painting, and drop-in logo installation.
  • Perform janitorial duties for the buildings.
  • Deliver equipment, supplies, and material by designated vehicle.
  • Requisition supplies and materials for maintenance, repair, and construction work.
  • Maintain surveillance and minor service to mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration equipment, reporting abnormalities or breakdown to the Manager of Arenas or designate Assistant Manager of Arenas.
  • Maintain all records in accordance with the Operating Engineers Act.
  • Maintain Daily Work Performance and Preventative Maintenance Logs.
  • Maintain Daily Heating System and Refrigeration Plant Logs.
  • Assist with the coordination of set-up for special events and functions.
  • In the absence of the Manager of Arenas, designate Assistant Manager of Arenas, Arena Maintenanceperson Lead Hand to protect the Facility, collect monies from ice rentals, and accept responsibility for monies generated by the canteen and ticket sales, oversee and instruct part-time maintenance staff and security personnel in the safe performance of their duties.
  • Maintain a good corporate image of the Department and CGS.
  • Ensure all procedures in the Arenas Safe Work Procedures Manual are followed.
  • Provide the highest standard of quality customer service to a wide variety of Facility Users.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.
  • Possession of a Refrigeration Operator “B” Certificate, where applicable under the Act. Where the act does not apply, Basic Refrigeration Level 1 is required.
  • Other Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA) Certifications considered an asset.
  • Three (3) years* experience maintaining a similar type building and equipment, including working knowledge of building operating systems such as HVAC systems, sound systems, electrical, plumbing, fire, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Arena ice making operations and resurfacing.
  • Proven dependability to work without direct supervision.
  • Must have demonstrated strong customer service and interpersonal skills in dealing with the public, staff and outside agencies in a courteous and effective manner.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge operating an ice resurfacer.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • Provide at own cost, a Criminal Record Check.
  • May require the use of a personal or CGS vehicle on CGS business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's licence and have an acceptable driving record.

NOTE: For this position, years* is considered equivalent to winter seasons (ie: 3 years is equal to 3 winter seasons).

This job is also being posted as a development opportunity. Should there be no fully qualified candidate for this position, a candidate who can be expected to meet the required qualifications within a reasonable period of time may be considered for this position as a development opportunity.

Development opportunity rate of pay: $32.05 per hour. The successful candidate will be paid at the reduced rate until the minimum qualifications have been met.
