Casual Anesthesia Assistant

We currently have an opportunity for a Casual Anesthesia Assistant at Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN), located at WRHN @ Chicopee (formerly Grand River Hospital, Freeport Campus) and WRHN @ Midtown (formerly Grand River Hospital, KW Campus). WRHN is a regional health network committed to meeting the current and emerging needs in Waterloo-Wellington and beyond.

Position Summary

Anesthesia Assistants are responsible for the provision of respiratory care as established by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO) and the standards of the hospital. Assistants participate in the care of the stable surgical patient during general, regional, or local anesthesia under the clinical direction of the Chief of Anesthesia. In addition to providing technical support for complex anesthesia equipment, Assistants administer anesthetic gases and medications, perform conscious sedation, and are responsible for insertion and monitoring of intravenous and arterial lines. Assistants provide constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist and with the use of medical directives, as applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Participation in the care of the stable surgical patient during general, regional or local anesthesia under the clinical direction of the Chief of Anesthesia.
  • Technical support for anesthesiologist for complex anesthesia equipment, administration of anesthetic gases and medications, and conscious sedation.
  • Insertion and monitoring of intravenous and arterial lines.
  • Constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia under direct supervision and use of medical directives.
Requirements
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with valid certificate of registration with the CRTO with no terms, limitations or conditions.
  • Completion of (or current enrollment in) an accredited Anesthesia Assistant (AA) Program is required.
  • Minimum 3 years critical care experience.
  • BCLS, ACLS, and PALS required.
