Job summary

The Australian Fair Work Ombudsman in Canberra is seeking an experienced Assistant Director – Criminal Investigations to lead a small team and drive complex investigations and the preparation of briefs of evidence for potential referral to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.

You will develop investigators’ capability, provide operational and technical leadership, and work with CDPP, AFP and other agencies to strengthen investigative practice across the Branch.

Qualifications

• Substantial recent experience conducting and/or leading complex criminal investigations with responsibility for strategy, evidence gathering and assessment.
• Substantial experience preparing criminal briefs of evidence for prosecuting authority.
• Practical experience with criminal investigation methods and powers (e.g., warrants, interviewing, evidence handling).
• Experience leading investigators and providing technical direction and quality assurance.

Responsibilities

• Lead complex criminal investigations, including strategy, lines of inquiry, evidence gathering and admissibility.
• Undertake significant investigative work such as interviewing, evidence assessment and preparation for prosecution.
• Lead, supervise and develop a small team of investigators with clear direction and feedback.
• Quality assure investigation products before submission to Director or governance bodies.
• Manage priorities, risks and resources across investigations; advise on strategy and direction.
• Collaborate with CDPP, AFP and other agencies to develop investigative capability.
