Job summary

The Fair Work Ombudsman in Australia is seeking an Assistant Director – Criminal Investigations to lead a small team of investigators and oversee complex criminal investigations within OFWO's jurisdiction. You will shape strategy, coordinate with CDPP and AFP, and prepare briefs for potential prosecutions.

You will build capability across the branch, mentor staff, and ensure high-quality investigation outputs and evidence handling.

Qualifications

• Substantial recent experience conducting and/or leading complex criminal investigations with responsibility for strategy, evidence gathering and decisions.
• Experience preparing criminal briefs of evidence for prosecuting authorities.
• Practical experience with investigation methods and powers (search warrants, interviews, evidence management).
• Experience leading investigators and providing technical direction and QA of investigative work.

Responsibilities

• Lead complex criminal investigations, including strategy, inquiry lines and evidence gathering.
• Undertake significant investigative work including interviews and briefing for potential prosecution.
• Lead, supervise and develop a small team of investigators with coaching and feedback.
• Quality assure investigation products before submission to Director or governance forum.
• Ensure evidence management standards and risk control across investigations.
• Provide advice on strategy and direction; liaise with CDPP, AFP and OFWO teams.
