Job summary

NSW Health's St Vincent’s Public Hospital in Sydney is seeking a Telephonist/Receptionist for the Switchboard. This permanent full-time role greets patients and staff by phone, handles urgent situations, and supports critical hospital operations on a 7-day rotating roster, including day and evening shifts.

The successful candidate will have switchboard or receptionist experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to stay calm under pressure while delivering compassionate patient

Qualifications

• Experience in switchboard/contact centre or receptionist roles.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to stay calm and act quickly in emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Be the friendly, professional voice and face of St Vincent’s Hospital, welcoming and assisting patients, staff, and the public over the phone.
• Take charge in urgent situations, responding confidently to emergencies, contacting the Mental Health Crisis Team, and liaising with Security when needed.
• Provide compassionate support to callers experiencing distress, including challenges with drugs, alcohol, or mental health issues.
• Keep critical hospital Switchboard operations running smoothly by managing and updating medical rosters, directories, and administrative systems.
• Enjoy a dynamic, 7-day rotating roster that may include day, evening, overnight shifts, with main focus as Sacred Heart Receptionist (7:00 am – 8:30 pm daily).
