Job summary

Proofpoint is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to design, build, and operate large-scale data infrastructure on AWS. You will work across ingestion, transformation, and delivery, collaborating with data scientists, product engineers, and stakeholders to turn raw data into reliable data assets that drive product decisions.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software or data engineering experience, with at least 4 years focused on cloud data platforms.
• Deep expertise with AWS data services: S3, Glue, and Athena; data catalog, partitioning, and schema design.
• Strong Python programming skills; production-grade PySpark or Spark (Scala) experience.
• Solid SQL fundamentals; ability to write and tune complex analytical queries.
• Excellent communication skills to present trade-offs to engineers and non-engineering stakeholders.
• Proven mentoring experience and ability to lead technical design discussions.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).

Responsibilities

• Design scalable, reliable data pipelines using AWS Glue and Spark to ingest and transform large datasets.
• Build and maintain a cloud data lake architecture on S3 with well-defined partitioning and catalog schemas.
• Establish data quality frameworks, validation, anomaly detection, and SLA-driven alerts.
• Define engineering best practices: CI/CD for data pipelines, IaC (Terraform/CDK), and DataOps.
• Lead design reviews, mentor junior engineers, and influence the technical roadmap.
• Collaborate with data scientists, ML engineers, and product managers to model data and pipelines.
• Champion data governance and privacy-by-design across data assets.
• Troubleshoot incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and drive improvements.
• Contribute to ADRs and technical docs.
