Role Context
The Senior Wet Utilities Engineer - Drainage will lead the technical development of drainage and wet utility designs for infrastructure projects in Dubai. The position combines detailed engineering, hydraulic analysis, design management, client coordination, programme control, and team mentoring. The engineer will guide project teams through the preparation of plans, profiles, calculations, reports, technical specifications, and coordinated design packages. Strong technical judgment will be required to resolve complex engineering challenges, select efficient design solutions, and maintain compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and project objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical direction to civil engineers, wet utilities engineers, designers, CAD technicians, and digital delivery personnel.
- Lead the design of stormwater drainage, sewerage, potable water, irrigation, and associated wet utility networks.
- Supervise the preparation of design plans, longitudinal profiles, cross-sections, details, and construction documentation.
- Review drawings and models for technical accuracy, constructability, clarity, coordination, and compliance with design criteria.
- Develop complex drainage layouts, hydraulic solutions, engineering sketches, and non-standard infrastructure details.
- Apply advanced civil engineering principles to hydraulic and analytical models.
- Use InfoWorks ICM or equivalent software to assess network performance, capacity, flooding risk, and system behaviour.
- Establish baseline design schedules for assigned tasks and allocate work across the engineering team.
- Track progress against planned deliverables, identify delays, and implement recovery measures where required.
- Create workflows, templates, and repeatable design processes that improve team efficiency and consistency.
- Prepare and review drainage calculations, technical reports, design basis documents, and engineering assessments.
- Draft technical specifications and special provisions for complex or specialist infrastructure elements.
- Act as the primary technical interface with clients for assigned wet utilities and drainage work packages.
- Communicate design issues, recommendations, programme impacts, and technical decisions to clients and project management.
- Identify design risks, scope gaps, interface conflicts, and constructability concerns before they affect delivery.
- Raise clear technical queries to resolve ambiguities in project requirements and contractual scope.
- Guide staff in the application of quality assurance and quality control procedures.
- Review design outputs against internal checks, authority requirements, and project-specific standards.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through technical reviews, coaching, and structured knowledge transfer.
- Support the preparation of design estimates, staffing plans, task budgets, and level-of-effort calculations.
- Monitor hours spent against individual tasks, drawings, and project deliverables.
- Contribute technical input to competitive proposals, commercial submissions, and project execution plans.
- Coordinate with roads, structures, utilities, environmental, landscape, and digital engineering teams.
- Ensure design submissions are completed accurately and within agreed project deadlines.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor 's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Master 's degree in Civil Engineering, water engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of drainage, wet utilities, or infrastructure design experience.
- Professional Engineer registration such as PE, PEng, or CEng is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary design teams and coordinating complex deliverables.
- Advanced knowledge of stormwater drainage systems, hydraulic modelling, gravity networks, and pressure systems.
- Strong command of current engineering technologies and the ability to select appropriate design software.
- Proficiency in InfoWorks ICM or an equivalent hydraulic modelling platform.
- Ability to apply advanced analysis techniques to complex civil engineering problems.
- Thorough understanding of infrastructure design standards, authority regulations, codes, and industry practices.
- Experience preparing design reports, calculations, specifications, plans, profiles, and detailed drawings.
- Knowledge of quality assurance, quality control, design checking, and technical review procedures.
- Ability to estimate design effort, assign resources, monitor hours, and manage delivery schedules.
- Strong client-facing communication and technical presentation skills.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Ability to explain technical and non-technical matters clearly to clients, managers, and project personnel.
- Proven capacity to mentor engineers and support the technical development of project teams.
