Role Context
The Secondary English Teacher will help students become confident readers, articulate communicators and independent thinkers through a curriculum that combines literary study, language development, writing and critical interpretation. The role requires an educator who can guide students beyond basic comprehension towards deeper analysis of texts, ideas, perspectives and authorial choices. Within the full International Baccalaureate continuum at GEMS International School - Dubai Hills, English teaching is expected to encourage inquiry, reflection and international-mindedness. Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging Secondary English lessons within the school 's IB learning environment.
- Develop students ' reading comprehension, literary analysis and critical interpretation skills.
- Strengthen academic, analytical and creative writing through structured teaching and regular practice.
- Guide students in evaluating themes, perspectives, language choices and literary techniques.

- Design concept-driven learning experiences that connect texts with wider cultural and global contexts.
- Differentiate lessons to ensure appropriate support and challenge for students with varying levels of attainment.
- Select purposeful texts and learning resources that broaden students ' literary and cultural understanding.
- Use formative assessment to identify strengths, misconceptions and areas requiring further development.
- Monitor student progress and use evidence to refine planning and classroom instruction.
- Provide constructive feedback that improves written accuracy, argument, structure and analytical depth.
- Prepare students for relevant IB Secondary assessment requirements and advanced academic study.
- Maintain high expectations for participation, academic integrity and quality of written work.
- Build an inclusive classroom environment where students feel confident expressing and challenging ideas.
- Encourage independent reading and sustained engagement with literature.
- Collaborate with English colleagues on curriculum planning, assessment and moderation.

Ideal Profile
- Recognised teaching qualification appropriate for Secondary English education.
- Strong academic background in English, Literature or a closely related subject.
- Successful experience teaching English at Secondary level.
- International Baccalaureate teaching experience is advantageous.
- Experience within a strong British or other international curriculum environment is also relevant.
- Secure knowledge of literature, language and writing instruction.
- Ability to deliver inquiry-led and concept-driven learning.
- Strong understanding of assessment and student progress monitoring.
