Role Context

The English Teacher will develop students ' command of language while cultivating thoughtful engagement with literature and increasingly sophisticated forms of communication. Teaching will integrate close reading, analytical and creative writing, speaking and listening so learners become precise, confident and independent users of English. The school 's secondary expansion gives the role an important developmental dimension. With Year 10 opening in September 2027 and subsequent growth towards Year 13, the postholder will contribute to curriculum sequencing, assessment standards and resources that prepare students for GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature and future advanced study.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver challenging Secondary English lessons aligned with the National Curriculum for England.
  • Develop accurate, fluent and increasingly sophisticated reading and writing.
  • Teach students to analyse literary and non-literary texts critically.
  • Build understanding of language, structure, form, context and authorial choices.
  • Develop analytical writing through well-supported interpretation and evidence.
  • Strengthen creative, persuasive, descriptive and transactional writing.
  • Improve students ' vocabulary, grammar, spelling and control of written expression.
  • Develop speaking and listening through discussion, debate, presentation and collaborative learning.
  • Encourage sustained independent reading across diverse genres and literary traditions.
  • Guide students in comparing texts, viewpoints and methods.
  • Create purposeful opportunities for students to articulate and defend interpretations.
  • Establish high expectations for written work, participation and academic achievement.
  • Maintain an inclusive classroom environment where students can explore ideas confidently.
  • Differentiate instruction according to literacy levels, attainment and individual learning needs.
  • Use formative assessment to identify gaps in reading, writing and analytical understanding.
