Role Context

The Secondary Chemistry Teacher will help students develop a rigorous understanding of chemical principles while building the analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills expected within an international curriculum environment. The role combines strong subject teaching with inquiry-based learning, practical investigation and careful assessment of student progress. At GEMS International School - Dubai Hills, Chemistry sits within a broader learning culture shaped by the International Baccalaureate continuum. The successful teacher will therefore be expected to move beyond content delivery and encourage students to question, investigate, connect concepts and apply scientific understanding in increasingly independent ways.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and teach high-quality Secondary Chemistry lessons aligned with applicable IB curriculum expectations.
  • Deliver inquiry-led learning that develops curiosity, scientific reasoning and conceptual understanding.
  • Teach chemical principles through a balanced combination of explanation, investigation, discussion and practical work.
  • Design learning sequences that build progressively from foundational concepts to more advanced Chemistry content.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying levels of readiness and attainment.
  • Create an inclusive classroom in which students are appropriately challenged and supported.
  • Use practical laboratory activities to strengthen understanding of scientific methods, evidence and experimental design.
  • Assess student knowledge and skills through appropriate formative and summative approaches.
  • Analyse student performance data and adapt teaching to address gaps or extend higher-performing learners.
  • Provide clear feedback that supports improvement in scientific reasoning, written responses and examination technique.
  • Prepare students effectively for IB MYP, IB Diploma Programme or other relevant Secondary assessment pathways.
  • Apply strong subject knowledge to explain complex Chemistry concepts accurately and accessibly.
  • Promote safe laboratory practice and appropriate handling of scientific equipment and materials.
  • Collaborate with science colleagues on curriculum planning, assessment and departmental development.
  • Share effective teaching strategies and contribute to consistent standards across the department.

Ideal Profile
  • Recognised degree-level teaching qualification such as B.Ed, PGCE, State Teaching License or equivalent.
  • Academic specialism in Chemistry or a closely related subject.
  • Minimum three years of successful Secondary Chemistry teaching experience.
  • Previous experience with IB MYP and/or IB Diploma Programme is highly desirable.
  • A-Level Chemistry experience is preferred where direct IB experience has not yet been gained.
  • Strong and current Chemistry subject knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver inquiry-based and concept-driven teaching.
  • Experience using assessment evidence to improve student outcomes.
  • Confidence teaching students with different levels of attainment and learning needs.
  • Strong practical science and laboratory teaching capability.
  • Effective classroom management and organisational skills.
