Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Power Systems Electrical Engineer in Johannesburg to lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of critical power generation and distribution systems. You will conduct detailed studies, develop protection schemes, and mentor junior staff across projects in the region.

The ideal candidate brings 7+ years in power systems, proficiency with ETAP/PSS/E/DigSilent, and a PE (Pr.Eng.) or eligibility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
• Master's degree is a plus.
• Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in power systems engineering, with a significant portion focused on design and analysis.
• Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP, PSS/E, DigSilent PowerFactory).
• Strong understanding of power system protection principles, standards (IEEE, IEC), and relay coordination.
• Experience with substation design, HV/MV equipment, and transmission/distribution network planning.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.) registration with ECSA is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with renewable energy integration and grid codes is an advantage.

Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed power system studies, including load flow, short circuit analysis, and transient stability simulations using industry-standard software (e.g., ETAP, PSS/E).
• Design and specify electrical equipment for substations, transmission lines, and distribution networks, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
• Develop and implement protection schemes and relay settings to safeguard power system assets and ensure operational safety.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineering staff, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project managers, civil engineers, and construction personnel, to ensure successful project execution.
• Perform site inspections and commissioning activities to verify the integrity and performance of installed electrical systems in Johannesburg.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to power system operation and equipment malfunctions.
• Prepare technical reports, proposals, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
