About the Role

Our client, a major player in international shipping and logistics, is seeking an experienced Senior Freight Coordinator to oversee critical operations at the Cape Town, Western Cape port. This role is instrumental in managing the efficient flow of goods, coordinating with shipping lines, customs agents, and clients to ensure seamless import and export processes. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of freight forwarding, customs regulations and supply chain management, with a proven track record of success in a fast-paced port environment. This is a hybrid position, blending essential on-site coordination at the Cape Town docks with strategic planning and client communication performed remotely. You will be responsible for optimizing cargo movement, resolving logistical challenges and ensuring compliance with all international trade laws. We are looking for a proactive individual who can lead by example and contribute to the continuous improvement of our services.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate and manage the end-to-end process of freight movement, both import and export, through the Cape Town port.
• Liaise with shipping lines, trucking companies, customs authorities and clients to ensure smooth cargo clearance and delivery.
• Prepare and process all necessary documentation for customs declarations, permits and regulatory compliance.
• Monitor shipment progress, identify potential delays and implement proactive solutions to mitigate risks.
• Negotiate rates and contracts with service providers, ensuring cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
• Provide expert advice and support to clients regarding shipping regulations and logistics best practices.
• Conduct regular audits of documentation and processes to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Supervise and mentor junior freight coordinators, fostering a high-performance team culture.
• Maintain strong relationships with port authorities, customs officials and other stakeholders in Cape Town, Western Cape.
• Analyze logistics data to identify areas for improvement and implement operational enhancements.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in freight forwarding, logistics or a related field, with specific experience in a port environment.
• In-depth knowledge of international shipping procedures, Incoterms and customs regulations in South Africa.
• Proven experience in managing complex import and export operations.
• Strong negotiation, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholders.
• Proficiency in logistics management software and MS Office Suite.
• Ability to work effectively in a hybrid model, balancing on-site and remote responsibilities in Cape Town.
• Relevant degree or professional qualification in Supply Chain Management, Logistics or Business Administration is advantageous.
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities and experience in team management.
• High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
