Placements24 is seeking a Mine Maintenance Superintendent for a large-scale mining operation in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. You will lead the maintenance department to maximise uptime and overall equipment effectiveness, ensuring safe and compliant operations.

You will oversee mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic maintenance, develop and manage preventive and predictive maintenance programs, and mentor a team of supervisors, technicians and planners.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
• 8+ years in maintenance management within mining/heavy industry.
• Proven leadership of large maintenance teams.
• Extensive knowledge of heavy mining equipment and reliability principles.
• Strong CMMS and predictive maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic maintenance for mining equipment (haul trucks, excavators, drills, crushers).

About the Role

Our client, a large-scale mining operation, is seeking an experienced and results-oriented Mine Maintenance Superintendent to lead their maintenance department in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. This senior leadership position is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of all maintenance activities for mining equipment and infrastructure, ensuring maximum uptime and operational efficiency. You will oversee a diverse team of technicians and supervisors, manage budgets, implement preventative maintenance programs, and champion safety initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background in heavy equipment maintenance, proven leadership skills, and a deep understanding of maintenance best practices in the mining industry. This is a critical role supporting the continuous operation of a significant mining asset in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all aspects of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic maintenance for mining equipment (e.g., haul trucks, excavators, drills, crushers).


• Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive preventative and predictive maintenance programs.


• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of maintenance supervisors, technicians, and planners.


• Manage the maintenance budget, including forecasting, cost control, and capital expenditure planning.


• Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations related to maintenance operations.


• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and optimize maintenance costs.


• Oversee the management of spare parts inventory and procurement processes.


• Collaborate with operations, engineering, and procurement departments to ensure seamless workflow.


• Implement and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for maintenance activities.


• Troubleshoot complex equipment failures and develop effective repair strategies.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.


• A minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in maintenance management within the mining or heavy industry sector.


• Proven track record in leading and managing large maintenance teams.


• Extensive knowledge of heavy mining equipment, maintenance strategies, and reliability principles.


• Strong experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) and predictive maintenance technologies.


• Demonstrated ability in budget management and financial control.


• Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.


• Commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and environmental performance.


• Experience in continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) is advantageous.


• Must be based in or willing to relocate to the Nelspruit, Mpumalanga area.
