Job summary

Placements24 is sourcing an Apprentice Sommelier for a renowned fine dining restaurant in Paarl, Western Cape. This entry point role offers mentorship and hands-on training in wine service, cellar management, and guest interactions, with exposure to an extensive international wine collection.

You will work closely with the Head Sommelier to learn wine selection, food and wine pairing, and staff education, with opportunities to pursue WSET certifications and advance within a dynamic hospitality

Qualifications

• A demonstrable passion for wine and a desire to pursue a career as a sommelier.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and professional demeanor.
• Ability to provide exceptional customer service.
• A keen palate and willingness to develop tasting skills.
• Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
• Must be based in or willing to relocate to the Paarl, Western Cape area.
• Willingness to undertake further wine education and certification (e.g., WSET).

Responsibilities

• Assist in managing the restaurant's wine cellar, including inventory, ordering, and storage.
• Learn and execute proper wine service techniques, including opening, decanting, and pouring.
• Develop expertise in food and wine pairing recommendations for guests.
• Conduct regular wine tastings and educational sessions for staff.
• Assist in curating and updating the restaurant's wine list.
• Provide exceptional wine recommendations and service to guests.
• Ensure wine glasses and service equipment are clean and well-maintained.
• Gain knowledge of different wine regions, grape varietals, and vintages.
• Support the Head Sommelier in daily operations and guest interactions.
• Contribute to maintaining the high standards of the restaurant's beverage program.
