Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching child care experience for children aged 5-12. You will mentor, model positive behavior and guide activities across recreation, education, and character-building programs.

You will supervise, implement safety protocols, manage groups, and foster teamwork. The role requires communication with families, commitment to diversity, and participation in ongoing training to support children’s growth.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Meet the Lead Teacher qualifications per VA Department of Education/Division of Child Care Health and Safety.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Background checks and pre-employment requirements completed.
• Ability to communicate effectively with children and families.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times; enforce safety protocols.
• Lead and assist in delivering a diverse range of activities (sports, arts, STEM, nature).
• Manage a group of children; foster positive relationships and teamwork.
• Support positive behavior guidance and model appropriate behavior.
• Create an inclusive, welcoming environment respectful of diverse backgrounds.
• Communicate with children, parents/guardians, staff, and leadership; provide progress feedback.
• Participate in training and professional development to enhance skills.
