Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching experience for children aged 5-12. You will mentor, role model, and facilitate activities across sports, arts, nature, and STEM, helping kids develop social skills and confidence.

You will work under leadership to foster teamwork, manage groups, support positive behavior, communicate with families, and participate in training to grow professionally.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• CPR/First Aid certifications within 30 days of hire.
• Background checks and references required.
• Ability to work at various program locations.

Responsibilities

• Supervision and Safety: Ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times, actively supervising activities, meals, and transitions.
• Programming: Lead and assist in the delivery of activities including sports, arts/crafts, nature exploration, team-building, and STEM.
• Group Management: Manage a group of children, promote teamwork and cooperation, and help resolve conflicts.
• Behavior Management: Support positive behavior guidance and model appropriate behaviors.
• Inclusion and Diversity: Create an inclusive environment where all children feel valued and respected.
• Communication: Communicate with children, families, staff, and leadership; provide progress feedback.
• Professional Development: Participate in training and staff meetings.
