Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching child care experience for children aged 5–12. You will mentor and guide youth through recreational and educational activities, fostering social skills, confidence, and lasting memories.

As a Counselor II, you will ensure safety, lead diverse programming, manage groups, and reinforce positive behaviors while collaborating with families and YMCA staff to support each child’s development.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
• Meet the minimum qualifications for “Lead Teacher” as defined by the VA Department of Education Division of Child Care Health and Safety.
• Staff shall be in good character and reputation.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Completes all pre-employment requirements including background checks.
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills appropriate for interacting with children.
• Ability to be on time, every time for scheduled shifts.
• Ability to work at various program locations preferred.
• Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Supervision and safety of children at all times; implement safety protocols and emergency procedures.
• Lead and assist in a diverse range of activities (sports, arts & crafts, nature, STEM).
• Group management, fostering teamwork and resolving conflicts.
• Support positive behavior guidance and model good behavior.
• Create an inclusive environment where all children feel valued.
• Communicate with children, parents/guardians, staff, and YMCA leadership.
• Participate in training, staff meetings, and professional development.
