Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching experience for children ages 5–12. You will mentor, model, and facilitate a variety of recreational and educational activities, helping kids build confidence and social skills.

As part of the team, you will support positive behavior, communicate with parents, and participate in ongoing professional development to strengthen programming and community impact.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or the equivalent.
• CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
• Background checks and pre-employment requirements completed.
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills for interacting with children.
• Ability to be on time for scheduled shifts and work at multiple locations.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and ensure safety of children at all times, enforcing safety protocols.
• Lead and assist in diverse activities including sports, arts and crafts, nature, team-building and STEM.
• Manage groups, foster positive relationships, promote teamwork and resolve conflicts.
• Model positive behavior and reinforce social skills through praise and guidance.
• Create an inclusive, welcoming environment where all children feel valued.
• Communicate effectively with children, families, staff, and YMCA leadership.
• Participate in training, staff meetings, and professional development.
