Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching child care experience for children aged 5-12. You will act as a mentor and facilitator, guiding activities that build social skills, confidence, and lasting memories in a supportive environment.

You will supervise, lead diverse activities, manage groups, and model positive behavior while collaborating with families and YMCA leadership.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Meet the VA Dept of Education Lead Teacher qualifications.
• Staff must have good character and reputation.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Complete all pre-employment requirements including background checks.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety and wellbeing of children during activities and transitions.
• Lead and assist in delivering a diverse range of activities (sports, arts, crafts, nature, team-building, STEM).
• Manage groups of children and foster positive relationships and teamwork.
• Support positive behavior guidance and model appropriate conduct.
• Create an inclusive, welcoming environment for all backgrounds and abilities.
• Communicate effectively with children, families, staff, and YMCA leadership.
• Participate in training and professional development to improve skills.
