Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching child care experience for children ages 5–12. You will serve as a mentor, role model, and activity facilitator, guiding kids through recreational, educational, and character-building experiences.

You will supervise, implement safety protocols, lead diverse programming, manage groups, support positive behavior, and communicate with families and staff.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or the equivalent.
• Meet the VA DOE Lead Teacher qualifications.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Complete all pre-employment checks including background screening.
• Ability to interact with children with clear speaking, hearing and writing skills.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality for shifts.
• Ability to work at multiple program locations.
• Ability to build positive relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Supervise children and ensure safety at all times.
• Lead and support a range of activities (sports, arts, STEM).
• Manage groups and promote teamwork and positive relationships.
• Support positive behavior guidance and social-skill development.
