Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching child care experience for children and youth ages 5-12. You will serve as a mentor, role model, and facilitator, guiding children through recreational, educational, and character-building activities to build confidence and lasting memories.

You will supervise activities, deliver a diverse range of programs (sports, arts, STEM), manage groups, support positive behavior, and promote inclusion.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• CPR/First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire.
• Background checks and pre-employment requirements completed.
• Adequate speaking, hearing and writing skills for interacting with children.

Responsibilities

• Supervise safety and well-being of children during activities and transitions.
• Lead and assist in a diverse range of activities; sports, arts and crafts, nature exploration, STEM.
• Group management: foster positive relationships and promote teamwork among peers.
• Behavior management: support positive guidance and model appropriate behavior.
• Inclusion and diversity: create an inclusive, welcoming environment for all backgrounds.
