Job summary

YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a Counselor II to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching experience for children aged 5–12. You will mentor, model positive behavior, and guide kids through recreational and educational activities, helping them build confidence and social skills.

You will foster a supportive environment, communicate with families and staff, and participate in ongoing training to enhance your professional development and the YMCA’s mission-driven culture.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
• Meet the minimum qualifications for Lead Teacher per VA Dept. of Education.
• Staff must be of good character and reputation.
• CPR/First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• Complete all pre-employment requirements including background checks.

Responsibilities

• Supervision and safety: ensure the safety of children at all times while supervising activities, meals, and transitions.
• Programming: lead and assist in activities like sports, arts and crafts, nature exploration, team-building and STEM.
• Group management: foster positive relationships and promote teamwork among peers.
• Behavior management: encourage self-regulation and social skills through positive guidance.
• Inclusion and diversity: create an inclusive environment that respects all backgrounds and abilities.
• Communication: interact effectively with children, parents/guardians, staff, and YMCA leadership.
• Professional development: participate in training and staff meetings to improve skills.
