Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in Maryland is seeking a Veterinary Nursing Shift Lead to keep the shift rhythm, ensure top-tier patient care, and empower VEGgies with coaching and coverage planning.

You will lead huddles, manage on-floor operations, and maintain clear communication while adapting to changing needs. This role values empathy, ownership, and a growth mindset in a fast-paced ER environment.

Qualifications

• Credentialed Veterinary Technician or enrolled in VEG Credentialing Support Program.
• 1+ years of experience as a veterinary technician or assistant; emergency/specialty experience preferred.
• Strong grasp of clinical workflow and team dynamics.
• Leadership instincts, ownership mindset, and desire to grow professionally.
• Ability to stand for prolonged hours; lift up to 25 kg; work in a noisy environment.

Responsibilities

• Keep a clear pulse on patient status, team bandwidth, and shift-wide needs.
• Manage daily workflow and pivot when the unexpected hits.
• Ensure shift roles are assigned and adapted with clarity and care.
• Jump in on the floor when help is needed—no task is too small.
• Coordinate breaks, assist with conflict resolution, and model calm under pressure.
• Lead shift transitions, team huddles, and end-of-day wrap-ups.
• Communicate clearly, direct questions appropriately, and elevate key issues.
• Turn downtime into learning time or a moment to breathe.
• Flag incidents or notable events with transparency and growth mindset.
• Work with hospital leadership on coverage, call-outs, and coaching.
