Job summary

The Veterinary Assistant at Petco plays a key role in delivering high-quality medical care to our Vetco Total Care patients and exceptional service to their owners. You will support doctors during appointments, surgeries, and treatments while providing compassionate client communication and maintaining accurate medical records.

You will be part of a collaborative hospital team, ensure patient safety, and help keep the clinic clean and well-organized, with opportunities to grow technical skills

Qualifications

• Preferred to have at least 1-year previous experience working in veterinary practice.
• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Must be compassionate and sympathetic, and be able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations
• Must have telephone and computer skills
• Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change

Responsibilities

• Greet clients and patients, escort to exam room, obtain weight and vital signs, and record in EMR.
• Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
• Perform patient restraint, obtain/process lab samples, handle and dispense medications, and maintain EMR.
• Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and update records.
• Help prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures and monitor anesthesia.
• Provide in-hospital treatments, administer injectable and oral medications, IV fluids, and care for patients.
• Assist in training new staff and share knowledge as required.
• Keep hospital environment neat and clean and perform maintenance as scheduled.
