Job summary

Humboldt County’s Veterans Service Office is seeking a Veterans Service Representative to assist veterans, their dependents and survivors in obtaining federal, state and local benefits. You will provide information, guidance, and advocacy to ensure entitlement to services across education, healthcare, housing, and other programs.

The role requires interviewing, assessing needs, and helping with claim preparation and submission, including outreach to the community.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of benefits, services and programs available to veterans, surviving spouses and dependents.
• Awareness of applicable laws, rules and regulations.
• Ability to refer clients to local, state, federal and community services.
• Capacity to interpret and explain veteran benefits laws to clients.
• Strong record-keeping and office administration skills.

Responsibilities

• Counsel s veterans and families to obtain full range of services and benefits.
• Assist in preparing and submitting benefit claims to federal and state agencies.
• Make home visits to hospitals and convalescent facilities to assist with applications.
• Represent veterans before the VA and advocate for benefits as needed.
• Maintain case records and prepare activity reports.
