Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of two years of experience in an office environment atan institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply, and explain policies,procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience maintaining confidential and sensitive studentrecords in compliance with FERPA and other applicableregulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving as a School Certifying Official (SCO) withthe U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Working knowledge of VA-ONCE, Enrollment Manager, or other VAcertification systems.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing veterans'educational benefits.
  • Basic understanding of TXST administrative software includingBDMS, LOGI, Banner, Degree Works, and various NETapplications.
  • Experience working in a Registrar's Office at a 4-year,state-funded institution.
  • Experience evaluating degree requirements and academic recordsfor benefit eligibility.
  • Willingness to occasionally work outside normal businesshours.
  • Experience working with military-affiliated students, veterans,and dependents.
Job Description

As the Veteran's Affairs Specialist, you will determine whichcourses are certifiable using degree plans, transcripts, etc.Certify tuition adjustments and coursework for payment. Audit VAstudent files, certifications, and corrections for accuracy anddocumentation. Advise dependents of veterans and student-veteranson the certification process for federal and state militaryeducation benefits, to include determining eligibility andprocessing of the Texas Hazlewood Exemption and federal VeteransBenefits Administration benefits, mainly programs within the GIBill®.

Job Duties
  • Review and code information sheets. Determine which courses arecertified using degree outlines, deficiency plans, transcripts,etc. Certify coursework for payment.
  • Report changes in coursework/payment. Notify students ofproblems in a timely manner so that administrative changes can bemade before deadlines.
  • Audit VA student files, certifications, and corrections foraccuracy/documentation.
  • Calculate prior credit for transfer course work to accuratelyreflect students' academic progress.
  • Oversee and assist with filing and tracking VA studentelectronic files.
  • Advise/counsel veterans on application process for VAEducational Benefits.
  • Assist with determining eligibility and processing Hazlewoodand Chapter 31 benefits.
  • Assist customers on phone and in person in a courteous andhelpful manner.
  • Establish and maintain federal and state training requirementsas a school certifying official.
