Job Description:
The Assistant Director for Training and Development supportsResidential Experience by designing, implementing, and assessing acomprehensive training program for all staff levels within theunit. This role supervises full-time professional staff andindirectly supervises graduate and student employees. The AssistantDirector role focuses on expanding staff knowledge and skills toenhance student support, success and engagement. As a member of theResidential Experience leadership team, the Assistant Director willdirectly supervise Residence Directors and collaborate closely withdepartmental partners to advance training initiatives. Thisposition reports to an Associate Director for ResidentialExperience.
Job Duties:
Supervision:
- Supervise and provide leadership for full-time ResidenceDirectors and indirectly supervise Graduate Residence Directors andResident Assistants.
- Provide ongoing direction and feedback about performance withsupervisees. Evaluate performance, including conducting performanceevaluations effectively and efficiently and attending to theirprofessional development.
- Assist in the recruitment and hiring of direct reports,including reviewing applicant materials, conducting candidateinterviews, and offering recommendations for hiring.
- Develop competencies in other functional areas withinResidential Experience ensuring effective guidance forsupervisees.
Professional and Student Staff Training:
- Design and oversee all levels of training and ongoingprofessional development for Residential Experience staff,including professional and graduate staff and Resident Assistanttraining schedules.
- Develop learning outcomes and session objectives for alltraining initiatives. Establish and maintain professionalrelationships with departmental and university partners throughoutthe year to ensure the department stays in compliance with thevarious training requirements.
- Create and facilitate formal assessment of training programswith the explicit goal of continuously striving to improve thevarious training offerings to meet departmental priorities.
On-Call Responsibility & Student Support:
- Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation with live-inprofessional staff colleagues; recognize that residence halls areopen 365 days a year and therefore being on-call during holidaysshould be expected; respond to student and/or facilities issues orcrises as a third-tier responder and in person as needed 24-hours aday; high level of in-person response to mental health concerns,other student support situations should be expected.
- Consistent communication with senior leadership during crisesor emergencies; maintain accurate incident reports using Maxientsoftware. Work with Residential Life and Student Success teams torespond to critical incidents on campus; work with otherdepartments to provide an appropriate response to crises.
- Develop and maintain rapport with residents through regularstudent contact; attend supervisee building staff meetings asneeded; assess needs and concerns of residents; advocate forstudents in all aspects of their housing and educationalexperience.
- Identify personal and emotional concerns of students; provideappropriate resources and referrals; track and monitor studentissues using Maxient database; maintain contact with parents andother constituencies as appropriate.
Unit Leadership:
- Serve on the Residential Experience leadership team, managingand coordinating unit initiatives in support of departmental anddivisional priorities.
- Collaborate with other Assistant and Associate Directors inResidential Experience to deliver a consistent experience acrossall Residence Directors and communities.
- Monitor budgets associated with the functional area ofoversight and the residential area of supervision.
- Represent the Department, the Division, and the University tostudents, families, alumni, and other stakeholders.
