Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Unit Secretary to serve as the first point of contact for patients, visitors, and staff within a busy care unit. You will coordinate information flow at the nurses’ station, support physicians and nurses, and ensure timely handling of patient needs and requests.

The role emphasizes customer service, accurate recordkeeping, EMR familiarity, and adherence to hospital policies.

Qualifications

• High School or GED required.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Computer experience required.

Responsibilities

• Extends courtesies to patients, staff, and visitors in a prompt and responsive manner.
• Assists in monitoring visitor/employee access and badges in patient care areas.
• Escalates difficult patient, staff, or visitor situations and facilitates communication.
• Directs patients, staff and visitors according to hospital policies.
• Answers phone promptly and transfers calls using NMH standards (AIDET).
• Coordinates calls on multiple lines and responds to patient calls within identified timeframe.
• Reports urgent patient care requests to appropriate staff.
• Ensures nurse call system communications are clear and timely.
