Job summary

Baystate Health is seeking a Unit Clerk to support daily operations on the medical/surgical unit. You will coordinate bed management, admissions, discharges, and transfers, maintain patient records, and serve as a frontline resource for staff and families during shifts.

You will answer calls, relay messages, assist with scheduling, and help ensure smooth unit function while upholding patient-centered care and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Previous clerical and customer service experience
• Clerical and customer service experience in a healthcare setting preferred
• Computer literacy and ability to read/write in English required
• CPR/BLS certification may be required by department
• GED or HiSET required

Responsibilities

• Bed management coordination and communication with admissions, discharges, and transfers
• Maintain patient charts and records; prepare transfer/discharge packets
• Provide unit greeting and assist visitors as the first point of contact
• Answer phones, relay messages, and support clinical staff with information flow
• Assist with staffing assignments and daily unit scheduling
• Maintain unit logs and verify data entry into hospital systems
• Assist with post-discharge follow-up arrangements and appointments
• Coordinate supplies, equipment, and room readiness for admissions
• Monitor emergency procedures and locate equipment as needed
• Observe patient monitors and report irregularities to clinicians
• Support hospitalists with rounds, calls, and consults as directed
• Ensure documentation is complete and records are properly filed
