Job summary

American Traveler is seeking an experienced Med/Surg-Tele RN for a fast-paced inpatient surgical unit in Illinois. The role requires an active IL license and EPIC EMR experience to support a high-acuity patient population.

The position features a 3x12-hour day shift schedule, weekly pay, and comprehensive benefits. Travel and housing assistance are available for eligible candidates, with opportunities for orientation and on-site support in a Trauma Level 2 setting.

Qualifications

Active IL RN license required.
BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required.
Minimum 1 year of surgical nursing experience required.
Total joint replacement experience required.
Understanding of PCA pumps and reversal drugs (e.g., Narcan) required.
Experience managing sepsis required.
Experience with TPN/lipids required.
Experience with narcotic administration required.
EPIC EMR experience required.
RNs required to titrate Heparin drips per protocol.

Responsibilities

Inpatient Surgical Med Surg/Telemetry unit on the 3rd floor with 48 beds across two buildings.
Acute care setting, Trauma Level 2 facility.
Patient population includes neuro, general/abdominal surgery, ostomies, hernia repair, total joint replacements, PICC/TPN/lipids, dialysis catheter insertions, amputations, and urgent OR cases.
Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-6 at night, with LPN support and virtual admission/discharge nurses assisting.
Primary care nursing model frequently used.
Day shift, 3x12-hour shifts starting at 7am, scheduled 6 weeks in advance.
Required every other weekend (Sat and Sun, both shifts).
Holiday coverage required as part of core staff rotation.
No call or standby requirements.
Floating limited to like units only; if floated to higher acuity units, RN would assist without taking a patient assignment.
EPIC EMR used, with a conversion occurring in Q2 2026.
Tele monitor tech available to monitor strips; RNs must interpret their own strips.
Draeger brand telemetry monitors used.
RT manages CPAP, Airvo, and occasional BiPAP equipment.
CNA support available, more heavily utilized on night shift.
High patient volume with 8-12 surgical admits per day alongside ongoing discharges.
Provide direct patient care in a fast-paced surgical unit with heavy patient acuity.
Interpret telemetry strips independently despite tech monitoring support.
Charge nurse role typically held by Blessing staff on days and house supervisor on nights, taking a reduced assignment to assist the team.
Unit-specific orientation includes one 12-hour shift on the hire shift and unit, with an extended first day (12-14 hours) for orientation and computer-based modules.
4 hours of billable computer modules required prior to start, delivered the week before start date.
