Job summary

The People Concern invites applications for a Support Specialist at our Santa Monica shelter, providing frontline care to individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and addiction. You will be the first contact for client needs, monitor the facility, and support client progress in a teamwork-driven environment.

We emphasize trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and the housing-first model. Responsibilities include crisis de-escalation, documentation, and collaboration with colleagues

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or Equivalent.
• Minimum one year of related experience.
• Strong customer service skills and ability to handle difficult situations.
• Ability to work independently and think critically.
• Professional conduct in all circumstances.
• Familiarity with non-violent crisis intervention.
• Familiarity with issues faced by population served.
• Ability to self-motivate and organize others.
• Computer literate; able to use computerized database system.

Responsibilities

• Be visible on the floor at all times and actively engage and welcome clients.
• Conduct regular walk-throughs of the facility.
• Create a supportive environment to ensure client progress toward stability.
• Attend staff meetings, trainings and retreats as scheduled.
• Oversee client cubicle/bed area maintenance in a trauma-informed manner.
• Facilitate client engagement activities and groups.
• Complete incident reports and update shift logs; document in HMIS.
• Intervene during crises to de-escalate with safety in mind.
• Collaborate with the team to provide integrated care to clients.
