Job summary

The People Concern at Kensington Campus in Lancaster, CA is seeking a Support Specialist to serve as the first point of contact for immediate client needs and shelter support. You will respond to requests (phone use, linens, water, laundry), maintain a trauma-informed approach, and assist staff with shelter operations to support clients and the program.

You will monitor floors, engage with clients, document in HMIS, and participate in meetings and trainings.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED or equivalent.
• Minimum one year of related work experience.
• Strong customer service skills and ability to handle difficult situations.
• Ability to work independently and think critically.
• Professional conduct in all circumstances.
• Commitment to community empowerment and dignity.
• Familiarity with non-violent crisis intervention.
• Understanding of issues faced by the population served.
• Self-motivation and ability to motivate others.
• Computer literacy; able to use a computerized database system.

• Ability to obtain Food Handlers, CPR and First Aid certification.
• Demonstrated initiative for professional development.

Responsibilities

• Act as the first point-of-contact for client needs and requests.
• Monitor floor areas and ensure program guidelines and safety.
• Be visible on the floor and engage with clients.
• Conduct regular facility walk-throughs.
• Create a supportive environment to promote client stability.
• Attend staff meetings, trainings, and retreats.
• Oversee client cubicle/bed area maintenance trauma-informed.
• Facilitate client engagement activities.
• Complete incident reports and logs; document in HMIS as needed.
• Develop trusting client relationships using motivational interviewing and trauma-informed care.
• Intervene during crises to de-escalate with safety in mind.
• Work as part of a team to provide integrated care.
• Communicate effectively with management, peers, and clients.
• Maintain client confidentiality per laws.
• Other duties as assigned.
