Job summary

The People Concern seeks a Support Specialist for its 3001-Lancaster Interim Housing program in Lancaster, CA. This 100% onsite role supports clients with basic needs, safety, and trauma-informed care, working under the Senior Program Manager in a collaborative shelter environment.

Responsibilities include floor oversight, client engagement, incident reporting, and coordination with staff to ensure a respectful, secure, and supportive setting for individuals experiencing homelessness and related

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or Equivalent required.
• Minimum one year of related work experience.
• Effective customer service skills and ability to handle difficult situations.
• Ability to work independently and think critically.
• Professional conduct in all circumstances.
• Commitment to improving the community through empowerment and dignity.
• Familiarity with non-violent crisis intervention and issues faced by the population served.
• Ability to self-motivate and organize others; computer-literate.
• Able to obtain Food Handlers, CPR and first aid certification.

Responsibilities

• Act as the first point-of-contact for immediate client needs and requests.
• Monitor the floor and ensure safety, cleanliness and program compliance.
• Be visible on the floor, engage and welcome clients.
• Conduct regular walk-throughs of the facility.
• Create a supportive environment aiding client stability.
• Attend staff meetings, trainings and retreats as scheduled.
• Oversee client cubicle/bed area maintenance with trauma-informed care.
• Facilitate client engagement activities and groups.
• Complete incident reports, update shift logs, and document in HMIS.
• Develop trusting relationships using client-centered approaches.
• Intervene during crises to de-escalate using non-violent communication.
• Work as part of a team to provide integrated care to clients experiencing homelessness and related issues.
• Communicate effectively with management, peers, and clients.
• Maintain client confidentiality per agency, state, and HIPAA laws.
• Other duties as assigned.
