What you will do at Precinct One:

The Transportation Construction Inspector monitors on-going construction work to ensure compliance with standards, plans and specifications. The successful candidate will coordinate Precinct maintenance staff for the management of task, orders and constituent requests. You will assess and evaluates on-site conditions and determine appropriate work assignments. This position will also be responsible for coordinating other Harris County departments to ensure appropriate inspection and effective project management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will attend construction project meetings, field coordination meetings, and department coordination meetings.
  • Perform site assessments for potential work tasks.
  • Monitor work orders and capital project construction work for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Input and manage data using data management tools and project management programs.
  • Review project plans, specifications, project schedules and other construction documents for compliance with project scope.
  • Participate in emergency services in preparation for, during and following emergency-type events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field of study from an accredited college or university

OR:

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited college or university
  • Three (3) years of progressive transportation construction inspection experience

License:

  • Valid Texas State Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Infrastructure CIP, Operations and Maintenance best practices
  • Ability to observe construction activities and identify potential issues.
  • Awareness of transportation infrastructure components, such as roads, bridges, and drainage systems.
  • Understand basic construction processes and terminology
  • Familiarity with construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of general workplace and construction safety practices.
  • Basic understanding of local, state, and federal transportation regulations.
  • Awareness of common construction materials like concrete, asphalt, and aggregate.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment.

Experience:

  • Prior Government, municipal/county public works experience(preferred)

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full-time | Regular
  • Work hours for this position are typically 8-hours, 5 days per week with occasional after-hours and/or weekend work. For emergency events, additional work hours are expected and may include up to 24 – hour shifts and 7-day work weeks.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
  • This position includes standard office work which may require remaining stationary and working at a computer workstation for extended periods of time. At times files or boxes must be transported weighing up to 15lbs. It also includes fieldwork which may require driving to and walking through active job sites and/or undeveloped areas containing uneven and sloped surfaces.
  • This position may operate in an indoor professional office environment and/or outdoor environment. Exposure to various and extreme weather conditions, temperature variations, loud noises and possible dangerous chemicals could be encountered.
