Job summary

Blue Origin, a leader in space transportation, seeks a Thermal Hardware Engineer to define vehicle thermal requirements and decompose them into actionable specs. You will own ICDs and drive verification, testing, and cross‑functional reviews across the thermal domain.

You will collaborate with hardware design, systems, and test teams to ensure mission readiness, analyze tradeoffs, and support make/buy decisions while traveling up to 20% and potentially relocating.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
  • 3+ years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering best practices, integration processes, design for manufacturing, and quality control.
  • Experience in requirement analysis, interface definition, and verification/validation at subsystem and system levels.
  • Experience with flight integration and environmental qualification (thermal, vibration).
  • Understanding of subsystems' thermal implications across the mission lifecycle.
  • Background in active thermal control hardware or thermal analysis.
  • Experience with spacecraft thermal control hardware design and development.
  • Ability to perform simple thermal assessments via first principles/hand calculations.
  • Experience with DOORS, Jama, MATLAB, Cameo, Thermal Desktop.

Responsibilities

  • Define and decompose Vehicle Thermal and other subsystem requirements into actionable specifications within the Core Thermal-Fluids Heat transfer domain.
  • Develop and maintain ICDs with vehicles to ensure subsystem compatibility.
  • Own heat transfer component artifacts such as specs and safety products.
  • Conduct trade studies and make/buy decisions for hardware selection or optimization.
  • Lead verification and validation planning, including environmental testing and mission simulations.
  • Participate in hardware design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) and ensure artifact quality and compliance.
  • Support integration, test, and launch operations with hardware design team and resolve anomalies.
  • Assist in schedule management, hardware procurement, and vendor management.
  • Identify process improvements and foster cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ensure alignment of component data with Vehicle system teams and interfacing subsystems.
