Job summary

General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT invites students to join the Submarine Materials Engineering & Laboratory Services Summer Internship. You'll work alongside engineers across multiple groups, gaining exposure to welding, materials, testing, and lab procedures while contributing to ongoing submarine programs.

The program requires a minimum eight-week commitment in Summer 2027, with on-site work at Groton and related sites.

Qualifications

Must be enrolled full-time at a college or university
Freshman year completed prior to start of internship
US citizenship is required
Able to pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check
Available to work 40 hours per week for 8 consecutive weeks May 2027–September 2027

Responsibilities

Construction support of welding and structural components
Welding procedure qualification efforts
Database development and literature reviews to support technology
Shadowing engineers and reviewing weld procedures for Navy specifications
Review vendor weld procedure qualifications and repair plans
Material verification and development of composite material specs
Assist in R&D testing and development of procedures

Education

Bachelor or Masters degree in Material Science Engineering - Mechanical Engineering / Structures & Materials - Metallurgical Engineering - Welding Engineering - Electrical Engineering - Chemical Engineering - Civil Engineering - Materials Aerospace Engineering - Physics - Environmental Science Engineering
