Job summary

General Dynamics Electric Boat is offering a Summer Internship in Submarine Materials Engineering & Laboratory Services in the Groton area. Interns will engage with senior engineers, support in design and testing for nuclear submarines, and gain exposure to cutting-edge projects across multiple cross-functional groups.

The program requires a minimum 8-week commitment during Summer 2027, with onsite work and a medical screening/drug test, and US citizenship is required.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled full-time at a college or university
• Must be able to work 40 hours per week for 8 consecutive weeks May 2027–Sept 2027
• US citizenship required
• Must pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check
• Pursuing a Bachelor or Master of Science in relevant engineering fields

• Construction support of pipe and structural welding
• Welding procedure qualification efforts
• Database development
• Literature reviews for new technology development
• Shadowing engineers to learn welding organization
• Review vendor weld procedure qualifications for Navy specs
• Review weld vendors repair plans for Navy specs
• Failure analysis
• Special projects
• Material verification
• R&D testing and procedure oversight
• Specification histories
• Engage with engineers on material requests and obsolescence
• Analyze composite materials and develop material specifications
• Develop repair procedures for damaged composites
